Dorothea Maria Gsell
This drawing is attributed to Dorothea Maria Gsell, the daughter of the famous artist and naturalist, Maria Sibylla Merian. In 1699, Dorothea accompanied her mother on an expedition to Suriname, where they set out to record the country's diverse flora and fauna. Inspired by her surroundings, Dorothea managed to render the vivid red-orange colour of this ibis lifelike. Her technique of applying multiple layers of opaque paint on top of each other resulted in an impressive rendering of the beauty of this exotic animal.
