Delft Blue

Delft Blue, a traditional Dutch pottery originated in the 17th century and reflects the influence of Chinese porcelain. It has become an integral part of Dutch households. However, this quintessentially Dutch product has a global story. The technique of decorating pottery with tin glaze originally came from the Middle East. It reached the Netherlands at the end of the 16th century through Flemish immigrants. The porcelain examples that inspired Delft’s potters were brought by the VOC from China, and later, German porcelain also influenced the designs. Delftware became so sought after that it spread throughout Europe.

200 Years
Delftware has been produced for over 200 years across approximately 30 different pottery factories. Tens of thousands of men and women in Delft have contributed to a product with a European appeal. While it was widely purchased by the Dutch public, the finest pieces were reserved for the European elite.
