As a show piece or functional item, Delftware was unprecedentedly popular in the Golden Age. The pottery is now back in fashion, because the powerful blue of the playful designs immediately brings a fresh colour accent into your home. Also great as a souvenir, because it hardly gets any more Dutch than that! And these espresso cups will make your day! The refined Delft Blue decoration with birds and flower branches comes from 17th-century originals from earthenware factories 'De Metaale Pot' and 'De Drie Posteleyne Astonne'.

Delft Blue
Since the Golden Age, it has been impossible to imagine Dutch households without Delftware. But behind this typically Dutch product lies a worldwide story. The technique of decorating earthenware with tin glaze originated in the Middle East and had slowly spread across Europe. It reached the Netherlands at the end of the 16th century thanks to Flemish immigrants. The porcelain examples that inspired the Delft potters were brought from China by the Dutch East India Company. Later, they also looked a lot at German porcelain. Delft pottery became so sought-after that it spread all over Europe.

200 years
Delftware was produced in as many as 30 different potteries for more than 200 years. Tens of thousands of men and women worked in Delft on a product with a European appeal. A broad stratum of the Dutch population purchased it, though the best was destined for the European elite.
